Requirements For Teaching At UNISA (2023)

The University of South Africa (UNISA) is one of the biggest contributors to the South African education system. Requirements for teaching at UNISA are therefore the industry standard because as the institution that has produced more teachers in South Africa than anyone else, many students who want to study education and thus become teachers are probably going to first look at UNISA and its requirements, before looking anywhere else.

As you may already know, the University of South Africa is a populist institution; its mission is to provide education to as many people as it possibly can. For this reason, the requirements to study at Unisa are not particularly stringent. Aside from the degree programs through which one can easily qualify as a teacher, Unisa also has bridging courses which can help students qualify for admission to study education and other courses.

Requirements For Teaching At UNISA

The teaching course in question is the Bachelor of Education in Intermediate Phase Teaching, and the Qualification code for the course is 90103. This course can be done on a full-time basis or on a part-time basis in which modules will be spread out over an extended period of time, not later than 10 years. However, to study this course you are required to have the following:

Qualification admission requirements (Teaching Unisa)

To study teaching at UNISA you need to have a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with at least 50% in the language of teaching and learning, and also at least 40% in Mathematics or 50% in Mathematical Literacy.

Alternatively, you may have a Senior Certificate (SC) with matriculation exemption, or you may still qualify for the exemption from the Matriculation Board with at least a D symbol on HG or a C symbol on SG in which must be in the language of teaching and learning. Qualification is still possible with an F symbol on HG or a E symbol on SG in Mathematics.

You can still apply if you have a National Certificate Vocational (NCV) level 4 with at least 60% in three important subjects including the language of instruction; as well as 70% in four vocational subjects chosen from the NCV level 4 subjects.

The subjects under the following categories are approved to study for a BEd degree: All official languages at First Additional Language level, Agriculture and Nature Conservation, Business, Education, Commerce and Management Sciences Services, Mathematics and Natural Science, as well as Training and Development.

Those are the requirements to study education at Unisa. However, applicants who do not meet with the above requirements can apply for the Higher Certificate in Education; which is a bridging course that can help them qualify to study teaching at this institution.

If a student chooses to go through the Higher Certificate route; please note that he must successfully complete the module MTE1501, in order to qualify. It is important that students remember that while Unisa offers several higher certificate programs, only the Higher Certificate in Education course translates into a qualification to study Education.

After Applying for the Bachelor of Education in Intermediate Phase Teaching course at Unisa, the next step is payment of student fees and other financial commitments.

How To Make Payment To Commence Studying Teaching At Unisa

You can make the payment online or at a bank; but this should only be done after receiving your student number.

For Online Applications you are to pay R120 after application.

The University Of South Africa accepts credit card payments, but these cards are restricted to Visa and Mastercard only.

Bank Deposit

Cash and direct bank deposits can be made at any First National Bank (FNB) in South Africa. Therefore, in order to pay your application fees, please find an FNB bank nearest to you to make the payment.

Please ensure that you fill the deposit slip correctly because if it not correctly filled the payment may not be made. Also, please remember that the fees are non refundable; Unisa is not obligated to return monies that are paid in error.
