NSFAS is a government organization that provides financial aid for students who are in need and need it for their studies. The amount received from NSFAS is not enough to cover the total cost of housing, as there are other costs that are not covered by NSFAS. A student may qualify for accommodation allowance if they meet certain requirements. NSFAS will pay up to R5700.00 to a student who needs assistance with the cost of accommodation. It will only be paid on condition that the student studies at a public university or TVET college.
Does NSFAS Pay For Private Accommodation?
NSFAS is a government organization that provides financial aid for students who are in need and need it for their studies. NSFAS stands for National Student Financial Aid Scheme, and it is funded by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).
The amount received from NSFAS is not enough to cover the total cost of housing, as there are other costs that are not covered by NSFAS. The cost of food and transport may be very high in certain areas and you can’t get accommodation in these areas if you don’t have money for it. It is important that you understand this before applying for a place to live.
A student may qualify for accommodation allowance if they meet certain requirements.
Students who meet these requirements may qualify for accommodation allowance. If a student does not meet one or more of these requirements, then they will not be considered for accommodation allowance. Below are some examples of students who could qualify:
- A student who is studying full time at a public institution, has never studied before and does not have any dependents or private income.
- A married student with no dependents and no private income.
NSFAS will pay up to R5700.00 to a student who needs assistance with the cost of accommodation.
The amount you get depends on the type of institution you study at and your family income. The following table shows the maximum NSFAS accommodation bursary you may be entitled to:
Where your parents are beneficiaries of a social grant, such as child support grants or old age pensions, but have no other source of income (i.e., they do not work), then their combined monthly income cannot exceed R5 000 per month. You can also be considered for an accommodation bursary if your parents’ combined monthly income lies between R5 000 and R8 000 (excluding their social grants).
The following table shows the minimum amount that must be provided for each household member after deductions based on age:
As an undergraduate student in a Bachelor’s degree programme at a public university, Technikon or Tertiary Education and Training Institute (TETI):
- If you live off campus, NSFAS will pay up to R5700.00 per month towards the cost of accommodation in excess of what is provided by UCT/UCTS/UCTO/UCTWES/UNISA; this is irrespective of whether you are living in rented accommodation or with relatives etc…
It will only be paid on condition that the student studies at a public university or TVET college.
If you are a student and meet all of the following criteria, you can apply for financial assistance:
- You must be enrolled in full-time studies at a public university or TVET college;
- Your course of study must lead to a university degree;
- The course is not one year long (unless it is your first year); and
- You are in need of financial assistance.
If you study at private institution, you will have to find your own accommodation and pay for it yourself.
If you study at a public institution, the NSFAS will pay for your accommodation. This means that you do not have to worry about finding your own accommodation and paying for it. If you study at private institution, however, things are different. You will have to find your own accommodation and then apply for an allowance from the NSFAS in order to be able to afford it.

If you study at a private institution, then you will have to find your own accommodation and pay for it yourself. The amount received from NSFAS is not enough to cover all the costs involved in finding accommodation.
