Department of Cooperative Governance

The Department of Cooperative Governance (DCoG) is a department that forms part of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. The primary function of this department is to promote democratic principles and practices by supporting the development and maintenance of structures in which people participate meaningfully in decisions affecting their lives.

The DCoG came into being after a merger between the former Department for Safety and Security (DSS) with the former Community Development Department (CDD). The resulting entity was then renamed as DCoG in December 2004; previously it was called DSS/CDD until November 2006 when it changed its name to its current title.

Department of Environment and Infrastructure Services

The Department of Environment and Infrastructure Services is a department that works to provide Johannesburg with quality infrastructure and environment services. The department is responsible for the provision, maintenance and development of water supply and sewerage services, road maintenance, land use planning, traffic management as well as waste management in the city.

Department of Group Corporate and Shared Services

The Department of Group Corporate and Shared Services is a corporate services department that supports the Group Executive Committee in its strategic oversight of all business units, as well as providing shared service functions to these entities. The department manages strategic projects related to the infrastructure, property management and development, building maintenance and security; HR operations; IT infrastructure and application development; legal services; procurement services including budgeting, forecasting & reporting; business performance management (BPM) across geographies; integrated reporting processes & dashboards for improved accountability through real-time visibility into key performance indicators (KPIs).

In addition to providing support for the Group Executive Committee this includes:

Providing advice on general policy issues within the functional areas listed above
Developing strategies for implementing new initiatives affecting multiple business units or processes which may require cross-functional teams composed of members from different areas within GCS
Monitoring performance against agreed deliverables in order to ensure delivery on time with minimum risk

Department of Development Planning

The Department of Development Planning is looking for an Intern to assist in the development of the City’s spatial planning framework, including the preparation of the City’s spatial planning policy and procedures, and their implementation.

The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting in drafting a spatial plan for Johannesburg (and other urban centres within Gauteng). You will also be responsible for following up on any issues that arise from this work.

Skills required:

BSc Degree in Geography or other relevant fields
A minimum of 2 years’ experience in public administration or relevant field.
You must be between 18 and 35 years old.
South African citizens only can apply for these government internships.

You need to have a National Qualification Framework level 7/8/9 qualification, which means you have completed your degree or postgraduate studies within the last 5 years at university level.

You may also be applying if you’re currently studying towards one of these qualifications and expect it to be completed within 5 years from the date of application deadline. A copy of your academic history is required with this application form as proof that you meet this requirement.
