How to Apply for an NSFAS Loan (Step-by-Step Guide)
The application process is simple, but you must follow the steps correctly to be successful.
To apply for a student loan through NSFAS, first create a profile on the website of your school’s financial aid office (usually called “Student Financial Services”). Once you have done that, go here and follow these instructions: https://www-nsfas-org-za/howtos/loanapplicationform_jsp
NSFAS Bursaries – What You Should Know
NSFAS bursaries are awarded to students who are financially disadvantaged, or in need of financial assistance. This means that you must be able to demonstrate that you are unable to afford the cost of your studies without an NSFAS bursary. A few examples of how this can be demonstrated include if:
- Your family income is less than R40 000 per month; or
- You have already used up all other sources of funding, such as student loans and loans from relatives; or
- Your primary occupation is not earning enough money (e.g., a full-time student).
Step 1: Assemble all your supporting documents.
- You must have the following documents ready before you start your application:
- Birth certificate
- National identity document
- Proof of residence
- Proof of income
- Proof of academic achievement (if applicable)
For higher education, this can be in the form of a letter from a university confirming that you’re registered as an enrolled student. For training and skills development, it could be an offer letter from a school or college indicating that they accept you as their student.
You can also submit proof that you’ve successfully completed tests or examinations relevant to industry-recognized qualifications such as NQF levels 1–3 (including diplomas and certificates) or equivalent industry-specific training courses.
If any other supporting documents apply to your situation (for example, proof for physical disability), make sure these are included too!
Step 2: Register on the NSFAS website.
If you’re a South African citizen, you can register on the NSFAS website. You will need to provide details such as your name, surname, ID number and email address. Once you’ve registered, you will receive an activation code via email. This code is required when submitting an application for funding through NSFAS.
You can also register through the NSFAS portal or student portal if you have been provided with a sponsor reference number. The sponsor reference number allows access to their individual page where they can register and update their personal details at any time in order to make sure they are receiving any assistance they are entitled too. Registration takes less than five minutes and once completed individuals will be able to:
- Apply for funding on behalf of yourself;
- Submit payments electronically through bank transfers or debit orders;
- Check their financial status with regards to loans taken out previously by logging onto NSFAS student portal online
Step 3: Attach the supporting documents.
You will find the following documents on your application form:
- Proof of identity documents, such as a South African Identity Document (ID) or a valid foreign passport.
- Proof of residence documents, such as a Certified copy of an ID book, Certificate of Residence or Home Affairs letter.
- Proof of income/financial need document(s), such as pay slips and bank statements.
- Academic qualification(s) with an official transcript from the university concerned. If you completed your studies outside South Africa, we need an official transcript from the embassy or consulate where you studied (if this is not possible – submit any other proof that supports your academic qualifications).
Step 4: Complete your application and personal details.
Provide your full name and date of birth.
Provide your ID number.
Provide your email address.
Provide your cellphone number (must be in NFSAS contact list).
Provide home address, physical address (if different), preferred language and campus preference on the next screen if you would like them to be used when they are available in future processes or if they have been previously selected by you using My NSFAS self-service portal during any stage of the application process up until this point..
Step 5: Print, sign & date application forms
- Print, sign and date the application form.
- Ensure that the form is accurate and complete. This will make it easier for us to process your application.
- Make sure that your signature is clear and legible as this will be used to verify your identity during enrolment at institutions of higher learning. Please note that if we are unable to verify your identity through this document (for example, if your signature is illegible), you may have difficulty registering at any institution of higher learning in South Africa.
- Ensure that you print your name and ID number on the form so that we can link these details with those contained within SARS records when processing an application for NSFAS funding through e-Tax processing channels or by calling us directly on 0800 112 937 (toll free). For security reasons, please do not include any other personal information such as PIN numbers etc., as this will lead to delays in processing applications and could result in rejection of a student’s loan application due to incomplete documentation provided by them.
Step 6: Submit your application.
- Once you have completed the online form, click on the submit button.
- You will be redirected to a page that confirms your submission has been successful and gives you a unique reference number to use in case you need to query or check the status of your application.
NSFAS Application Status – How to Check Your Status Online
