Pastel operates as a smartphone app that allows users to control their home energy usage through dynamic tariffs. The company was founded in 2017 by CEO, Pieter Botha and CTO, Stefan Fourie. They both have backgrounds in electrical engineering and set out to create an easy-to-use energy management solution for South Africans.

Users select the period of time for which they want to see a snapshot of their current energy usage, and Pastel then generates a tariff based on this selection.
