You’ve heard about the points for teaching at UKZN, but are still confused about how many points you need to get into that course. Well, don’t worry! In this article we will be looking at some of the most important questions you may have regarding this topic.
How Many Points Needed For Teaching At UKZN?
If you do not receive the results that you want, do not panic! You can always re-apply next year.
If you are planning to apply for a teaching position at UKZN, it is very important that you have at least one of the following subjects: Mathematics, Physical Science, Life Orientation, English Home Language, Afrikaans Home Language, Agricultural Science (does not include Animal Care), Computer Studies (does not include Information Technology), Design and Technology and Information Systems.
You can also qualify with any other relevant subject if it is offered at post-school level by an accredited institution in South Africa.
The required number of points is determined by Faculty, or specialisation within a Faculty.
The required number of points is determined by Faculty, or specialisation within a Faculty. For example: in the Faculty of Health Sciences, if you wish to teach in the Department of Nursing and Midwifery, you will need 180 points. If you wish to teach in the Department of Pharmacy, you will need 120 points.
If your degree does not qualify for entry into one of these Faculties but is relevant to one which does (e.g., a BCom degree with English as an option would qualify for entry into one of our Faculties), then we will assess whether or not it meets minimum requirements for entry into that Faculty before determining whether or not it qualifies for consideration under our point system.
Please note that from 2016 students intending to follow a career in teaching as either a secondary or post-secondary teacher are required to choose English Home Language as one of the subjects in the National Senior Certificate (NSC).
English Home Language is also required for some subjects at university level. It is therefore important that you take this into account when selecting your NSC subjects. You may choose English Home Language as one of your subjects, but it must be with 10 points or more unless you have matriculated from another institution where you did not study English home language.
The increase in the points required for the teaching profession is part of a new set of regulations and quality assurance requirements set by SAQA and Umalusi respectively. These bodies are responsible for ensuring that universities and schools offer accredited courses to students, as well as ensuring that all educational institutions operate within their legal mandate.
In the case of Umalusi, this means that they ensure that higher education institutions maintain certain standards such as curriculum content, staff qualification levels, student admission procedures and so on. Similarly SAQA does this for school education; making sure teachers have adequate training before entering the classroom, that schools have proper facilities like libraries or science labs, etc.
Once your application has been approved, you will receive an offer letter that states the date on which your contract starts and the salary for which you will be employed. You will also be able to find out more about the course, university and application process as well as its academic calendar in this letter.
