Road Traffic Management Corporation Internship

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) is a public entity established by legislation and tasked with the overall management of all aspects related to traffic enforcement. The RTMC comprises several components, including:

Road Traffic Infringement Agency (RTIA): This is the national agency responsible for processing fines issued on behalf of SANRAL, SARTIS and Municipal TMCs.

It issues R2 million in summonses per month, while also assisting in training of law enforcement officers and providing customer service support to clients who have not paid fines.

South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL):

SANRAL operates the toll gates on roads in Gauteng; it processes millions of transactions each year at its toll points across Gauteng Province.

Road Traffic Infringement Agency:

The Road Traffic Infringement Agency (RTIA) is a unit within the Road Traffic Management Corporation that is responsible for the enforcement of road traffic laws. The agency’s functions include:

  • Collecting fines from those who are found guilty of breaking road traffic laws, which are then forwarded to SARS;
  • Processing fines collected from offenders;
  • Issuing summonses to arrested offenders requiring them to appear in court;

The RTIA also handles queries from the public about their cases or fines/summonses.

In addition, they welcome questions from courts regarding prosecution cases and compliance with legislation regarding summonses and warrants issued by magistrates’ courts (where applicable). They will endeavour to process these requests as soon as possible while ensuring they remain confidential due diligence.

South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL)

SANRAL is a state-owned company that manages the country’s national roads. It was established in 1999, following the restructuring of the Department of Transport and Public Works.

SANRAL is responsible for managing the e-tolling system (once operational), as well as managing the National Road Network.

It has been involved with a number of road infrastructure projects over recent years including Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project Phase II, Northern Cape Western Bypass Project and Northern Cape Eastern Bypass project among others.

South African Road Traffic Information Services (SARTIS)

SARTIS is a service of the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) that provides road users with real-time traffic information, including traffic incidents, roadworks and closures.
