Rhodes University is a public research university in Grahamstown, South Africa. Established in 1904 as Rhodes University College, it became a constituent college of the University of South Africa before becoming an independent institution in 1951. It is the oldest university in Zimbabwe and one of the oldest universities on the continent.
The university’s main campus is located on Rhodes Hill (formerly Groote Schuur Estate), about 7 kilometres north-west of Grahamstown centre. There are satellite campuses at Franschoek (Western Cape), Fort Hare (Eastern Cape) and Kimberley (Northern Cape). It also owns a rural property near Umtata in the Eastern Cape Province called Solms-Delta; this was once part of Groote Schuur Estate, but was sold off by Cecil John Rhodes when he established what later became known as Rhodesia.
