The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) provides financial assistance to students from poor and working class South African families, so that they can attend public Universities and Universities of Technology.

Most important are the NSFAS requirements for accommodation and accommodation related expenses.

  • Accommodation
  • Room and Board (R&B) or Flat Rental Allowance (FRA)
  • Utilities Allowance

Applicants must complete an online application form, which is available at www.nsfas.org.za on all Internet-enabled smartphones, tablets, PCs and laptops.

To apply for NSFAS funding, follow these steps:

  • Go to www.nsfas.org.za on all Internet-enabled smartphones, tablets, PCs and laptops
  • Complete the NSFAS online application form in full by filling out all the required fields (the link will open a new browser window)
  • Upload proof of identity documents such as an ID book or passport to prove your identity when submitting your application online via email or upload them on the website during submission of your application
  • Students will be required to apply for accommodation through the Nsfas system, where they will be assessed based on their family income and other factors.
  • Students who are unable to afford accommodation off-campus will be housed on campus, in residences owned by UPT. The university intends to expand these residences as needed.
  • This policy is expected to affect the university’s finances positively over time, as it frees up more money that can be allocated towards academics instead of housing costs.
