1. Make sure you research the system before you join – there’s a lot of information available online, so take the time to familiarise yourself with the basics before committing to teaching in South Africa. 2. Join an educator association – this will give you access to resources and support network, as well as opportunities to meet other teachers and learn from them.

What are your qualifications for the position?

I’ve been working as a teacher for over 10 years now and I absolutely love it! I think the best part about teaching is seeing the student’s faces light up when they understand something new. Each student is different and requires a different approach, but there are some general tips that work well for most kids.
1. Be patient – This goes without saying, but being patient is key when dealing with difficult students. If you’re getting frustrated, try not to show it in front of the student. They’ll pick up on that and it will just make the situation worse. Instead, keep your cool and be prepared to give them a few awkward moments before things start flowing again.
2. Respect their time – When it comes to class, everyone has their own schedule and priorities. Don’t try to rush the student and force them to do things they don’t want to do. Let them know what’s expected of them and be respectful of their time constraints. You also don’t want them feeling like they have to put up a tough act in order to get along with you – that’s not going to help their learning process at all!
3. Use constructive feedback – Feedback isn’t always going to be positive (or even effective!), but it’s important that teachers use feedback effectively in order to help the student improve. For example, if

When I was a student, I had to lead and manage a team of people in order to complete an assignment. The team was composed of students from different classes and backgrounds, which made the task significantly more difficult. It was frustrating trying to get everyone on the same page and working towards a common goal, but eventually we succeeded.
