How To Change Courses At University Of Johannesburg

I’ve changed my course at university more times than I can count, and I’m not even sure if it’s been done in the best way possible.

When people ask me how I’ve changed courses so many times, they either what qualifications I have or they want to know how it’s possible to do something so drastic without having to repeat a year. Well guys, in this post, I’ll be sharing my story and hopefully, help you too!

How To Change Courses At University Of Johannesburg

The University of Johannesburg has adopted a student-centred approach to the first year experience, which is based on research into the issues confronting first-year students.

The Student Affairs Office coordinates and administers this process at UJ.

In 2008, UJ developed a three level system for its first year students:

  • Level 1: Preparation for university – aimed at students who have not done particularly well in matric or have chosen not to pursue higher education
  • Level 2: Foundation level – designed for students who have passed their exams but are academically weak in certain subjects
  • Level 3 – Advanced level – for those who wish to accelerate their studies

The main purpose of this student-centred programme is to improve the success rates of first-year students by providing them with the necessary academic, personal and social support.

The programme includes workshops, mentorship and peer support as well as a structured induction process for each unit of study.

A common problem among first-year students concerns their choice of a program and field of study. It is important to choose wisely because the degree you choose will determine what career path you take as well as how much money you make in the future.

Choosea program that interests you: There are plenty of options available at university; however, make sure that the program is something that interests you enough to keep up with it throughout your studies.

Don’t enroll in something just because it seems interesting right now; wait until later on when you actually have some experience under your belt before committing yourself entirely to an academic field of study.

When people ask me how I’ve changed courses so many times, they either what qualifications I have or they want to know how it’s possible to do something so drastic without having to repeat a year.

The truth is that I don’t have any qualifications. I skipped studying for my bachelor’s degree and went straight into doing an honours degree, which meant that my grades were good enough for me to get accepted at the university of Johannesburg (UJ).

The way UJ works is different from other universities in South Africa; instead of repeating your first year you do an extra year on top of your bachelor’s degree to complete your honours.

This means that if you’re not ready for it, then it will all be harder than if you had started with the right school in the first place!

Well guys, in this post, I’ll be sharing my story and hopefully, help you too.

Don’t be afraid of change. If you want to do something that is different from what you are currently doing, then do it! Change can be scary but it is also fun and exciting.

You might end up regretting not trying something new because there is always the chance of failure but if you don’t try then you will never know!! So start taking risks today and let them pay off for the rest of your life.

My first choice was BCom Accounting Sciences but I applied for Pub Admin as well because, at the time, I felt like it was my best chance at getting into UJ.

My first choice was BCom Accounting Sciences but I applied for Pub Admin as well because, at the time, I felt like it was my best chance at getting into UJ.

The way that BCom Accounting Sciences works is you need to go through a huge amount of subjects and then take an exam at the end of each year.

The problem with this is that most of your subjects are unrelated—for example, if you’re studying accounting and business studies in one semester (which is common), there’s very little context between what you’re learning in both classes because they’re taught by different lecturers who have different methods for teaching their subjects.

Pub Admin has a more structured curriculum where each subject builds on the previous one so you actually understand what’s going on when something new comes up later down the line.

For example: if we were talking about taxes or payrolls in class 2,3 or 4 respectively then by time we got to 5th/6th semester we would’ve had enough knowledge from previous courses to be able to understand how those things worked within our business environment instead of just reading about them in 2 separate courses (like with Accounting).

Your direction is as important as your destination choose wisely!

Choosing a course is a big decision. It’s important to choose a course that you are passionate about and it also needs to help you achieve your career goals. Don’t forget, though, if you make a mistake, there are always other options!

Closing

The last thing I want to say is that if you want to change courses, it can be done! It all depends on how much effort you put into it, how much support and motivation you have from yourself and others around you.

If something doesn’t work out for whatever reason, don’t give up – keep trying until it does because in the end it will all be worth it!
