It’s no secret that university isn’t cheap. In fact, it’s one of the most expensive things that you can do in your life – especially if you’re living on campus. But what about off-campus accommodation? Is there a way for students to get help with accommodation costs? The answer is yes! The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a scheme that was established by the South African government to ensure that students from poor and working class backgrounds can access university education.

How Much Does NSFAS Pay For Accommodation?

The NSFAS scheme pays for your accommodation, food, books and medical aid. This can be done through a debit order that is deducted from your allowance each month. If you are living in residence or with a friend who has been approved by the school to provide board and lodging, then this will be paid directly to them.

Food

If you’re living in residence, your food allowance is R1 500 per month. If you’re living off campus or at home with your parents, your food allowance will be paid in full to the institution on a monthly basis.

Medical Aid

Medical aid is a fund paid by the South African government to help you pay for your healthcare costs. You can use it to cover anything from private healthcare providers to public hospitals, prescription medicines and more. This may include private doctors, specialists, dentists and optometrists. It’s also used to cover health insurance premiums if you choose that option.

The amount depends on your age group and whether or not you’re studying full-time at university or college. The maximum monthly contribution for students aged 18 to 26 years old is R1 050 per month (as of 2018). The maximum monthly contribution for non-students aged 18 years or older is R1 000 per month (as of 2018).

Travel

When it comes to your travel, SA NSFAS will pay for the following:

You going to and from your university. This includes taxis, trains or buses.

If you live in a rural area and do not have public transport available to you, the institution can provide accommodation at an approved hostel or student residence within walking distance of campus.

However, they cannot pay for travel between home and work if you commute on a daily basis; this excludes those who are studying full-time and also have another job outside campus hours (like working in retail).

Use NSFAS For R1 350 000 00 Loan

You can apply for a loan for your studies at a bank, or you can apply for it online.

To apply for an NSFAS loan, you can go to the National Student Financial Aid Scheme’s website and fill out the form. You will need to provide information about your identity and income, which will be verified by the South African Revenue Service (SARS). If this information checks out with SARS, then the application process proceeds smoothly.

If your application is accepted by SARS, then they will notify NSFAS of their approval. After this stage is reached, NSFAS requires that applicants create profiles on their website where they complete an online assessment test as well as upload photos of themselves holding important documents such as passports or birth certificates; after this is done successfully and passed successfully by NSFAS staff members working in various offices around South Africa (there are many!), applicants receive confirmation emails letting them know exactly how much money they’ll receive each month through loans!
