Students who have completed the requirements for a National Diploma (ND) are eligible to apply for the Higher Certificate in Business Studies (HBCS). The qualification is awarded by the Department of Higher Education and Training.
Students must complete 140 credits at NQF Level 6, 120 credits from year 1 and 2, 60 credits at NQF Level 5 or better, maintained an average of at least 50% in their Supplementary Examinations and passed all modules at NQF level 6 with an average of at least 50%.
Higher Certificate Pass Requirements
If a student does not pass at least 140 credits at NQF Level 6, he/she will need to repeat the year of study. This means that you have to take all your subjects again and pass with a minimum of 40% in each subject.
Students must have achieved a minimum of 120 credits from year 1 and 2. Students must have passed all modules at NQF level 6 with an average of at least 50%. They must also have maintained an average of at least 50% in their supplementary examinations

The average is calculated using the best 6 modules if none of the modules failed in any of the subject areas and there was no incomplete work in any of the subject areas. The average is calculated using the best 3 modules if one or more of the following apply:
- Failed more than three modules; or
- Had a fail grade on one or more modules, and/or incomplete work on one or more modules; or
- Was repeating a year due to academic reasons and was granted permission by his/her educational institution. The examinations must be repeated within three months from when they were written originally.
Students must have passed all modules at NQF level 6 with an average of at least 50%. This includes any additional modules taken.
The average is based on the number of modules passed at NQF level 6, calculated by dividing the sum of the grades by the number of modules passed at NQF level 6. The result is rounded to the nearest whole number.
For example: if a student passes three modules (A, C and D) with grades A+ 90%, B+ 80% and D 70%, then their final average is calculated as follows:
Sum = 3 x 100 (grades) = 300; Divided by 3 x 100 (number of modules): 300 รท 3 = 100; Rounded to whole numbers: 100/3 = 33
In order to qualify for a Higher Certificate, students must pass the equivalent of 140 credits at NQF Level 6 in the BCur course. Students are required to have achieved a minimum of 120 credits from year 1 and 2, who also need to maintain an average of at least 50% in their supplementary examinations.
In addition, candidates should ensure that they have met all requirements outlined by their institution or school before applying for admission into any university programme.
