First Name:

  • Your first name is required. For example, if your full name is David James Smith, enter David in the First Name field. However, if your full name is John F. Smith Jr., you must enter John F. in the First Name field to avoid confusion with other applicants who may have similar first names such as Mary Ann or Michael.*

  • For example, if your last name is Jones and it was spelled “Jones” on all of your application materials (application form, essays), then enter “Jones” into this field even though it may appear differently on some documents than others (e.g., Johnson). You must be a resident of South Dakota to receive your tuition waiver. If you are not currently a resident of South Dakota, but have been one for at least two consecutive years prior to applying for Free State’s Tuition Waiver Program, please select “RESIDENT.”

If you are not currently a resident of South Dakota and have NEVER been one in the past, please select “NON-RESIDENT.”

Please note that all applications for admission are done online unless otherwise stated by the program.

To apply for more than one program at Free State University, please complete the following steps:

If you don’t have a social security number, please type in a fake one. If you do have one but forgot it, we recommend that you use the same one from last year as it will be more likely to work than any other random number.

Select the reason you are applying for admission. If you are applying for a degree, select the program you are applying for. If you are applying for a certificate, select the program you are applying for.

If you have changed your name, enter it in this section. If you have changed your name and have not notified the university of the change, please do so by entering your original birth name in this field. If you have changed names, please also update your social security number by calling 1-800-944-8778 or visiting www.ssa.gov/ssnumber/.
