Most universities in South Africa have a low application fee. This is because they use the money to cover the cost of processing your application and don’t make any profit from it. However, there are some exceptions to this rule – like the University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN) for example.

These are institutions funded by the South African government that are open to anyone who can pass their admission requirements. The quality of these schools may vary widely—some only accept a small percentage of applicants, while others have very low standards and grant degrees to virtually anyone who applies. While many students choose them because they don’t have the money or desire to attend more prestigious institutions, this is not always a wise decision: since most federal government funding goes toward providing financial aid for those attending private institutions anyway, attending a public school will often cost more than paying tuition at one with higher academic standards (in addition to being less selective).

The following list gives the application fee for each of the 23 universities in South Africa.

• Stellenbosch University – R6,500 (N/A if you are from a designated rural area or have a B+ average)
• University of Pretoria – R5,000 (N/A if you are from a designated rural area or have an A- average)

 DUT

DUT is a state university in Bloemfontein, Free State Province. It was established in 1918 as the University College of the Orange Free State (UCOS) and became an independent university in 1951. Currently it has close to 50 000 students and over 2 000 lecturers.

The university offers more than 200 programmes of study at undergraduate level and approximately 50 postgraduate courses across its seven faculties: Arts; Education; Natural & Agricultural Sciences; Law; Commerce; Engineering & Built Environment; and Health Sciences.

CPUT

CPUT is a public university, which means it is funded by the government. It has branches across South Africa and it offers several programs at these branches.

CPUT was established in 1982 through the merger of three technical colleges: Cape College, Peninsula Technikon and Delft Technical College. The university also has an agreement with Doordarshan Society to produce TV programmes for them.

The main campus of CPUT is located in Tyger Valley (Cape Town), although there are other campuses spread across South Africa. In 2006, they signed an MOU with the University of Bedfordshire UK; this allowed students from both institutions to study each others’ courses at their respective home campuses or abroad via joint study modules

University of Mpumalanga

VUT

VUT has campuses in Pretoria, Vanderbijlpark and Mahikeng. It offers more than 200 courses at various levels and a wide range of study options.

It also offers a number of specialised programmes that include:

WSU

WSU has a R100 application fee, a R100 registration fee and an additional R100 matriculation fee.

UKZN

If you’re from one of these universities, you can apply for a fee waiver. Fee waiver applications must be submitted by 30 June and will be processed by 1 July. Note: if you’re applying for a fee waiver for all three years at UKZN, your application must include all three years in one document.

You can apply for the following categories:

Students from the Eastern Cape, KZN and Limpopo who have scored a minimum of 80% aggregate or better on their previous academic qualification (i.e., matric). You will need to upload proof of your previous academic qualification with your application letter.

Students with disabilities who are not eligible for National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) funding but meet the requirements set out in UKZN’s policy on access and equity; or students who don’t meet NSFAS’s criteria but are receiving disability grant funding through Disability Action KwaZulu-Natal (DAK), providing they have been registered as disabled since birth or since their last change of condition form was submitted to DAK (if applicable).

HIV positive applicants who do not qualify for government bursaries because their viral load is too high but still meet the academic requirements set out by UKZN; or applicants who do not qualify for government bursaries because their viral load is too low but still meet the academic requirements set out by UKZN

UWC

The University of the Western Cape (UWC) is a public institution that offers the first two years of bachelor degree courses, as well as continuing and further education programmes. The university also offers postgraduate studies leading to master’s degrees in business administration, law and journalism.

Many universities offer fee waivers for students who qualify. The waiver is usually for a limited period, so you will need to reapply each year.

You will also need to provide proof that you are eligible for the waiver and your application should be submitted within the time specified on your offer letter or email from the university.
