Do You Have To Pay Back NSFAS Bursary?

Like all students, you probably have a lot of questions about the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). One of those questions is whether you have to pay back your bursary or loan. The answer is no. The money that NSFAS gives you is not a loan, but rather a grant to help with your higher education costs. Though there are some restrictions on what type of laptop you can buy with this money, it’s still yours to keep forever!

Do You Have To Pay Back NSFAS Bursary?

It is important to note that this is a bursary and not a loan. You do not have to repay it, but you do need to return to campus the following year.

If you are studying a critical skills course or your family income is less than R600 000 per year, you may be eligible for a loan in addition to your bursary.

If you are a student who is in need of a laptop to complete your studies, the NSFAS has made it easy for you to access this equipment. Students can use their Tertiary Education Management System (TEMS) account at their higher education institution’s online shop to access a list of qualifying laptops for purchase.

To access your TEMS account and make use of the funds that have been allocated to pay for your laptop:

  • Log into your University page on the NSFAS website and select “Access My Account.” This will take you through an authentication process where you need to enter personal information such as date of birth, gender and ID number (if applicable).
  • Once logged in successfully, scroll down until you see “My Loans.” Under this heading is another option called “My Laptop,” which will take you further into the system where all of your loans can be viewed in detail.
  • Selecting “My Laptop” opens up another window with instructions on how students can make purchases using their TEMS accounts; however, note that not all institutions offer online payment services based on where they’re located so check with them first before proceeding with payments through their accounts directly instead!

If you’re studying a critical skills course, or your family income is less than R600 000 per year, you can apply for NSFAS loans and bursaries through your higher education institution.

If your family income is over R600 000 per year and you qualify for the NSFAS loan, it will be repaid from your monthly salary after you graduate from university.
