You may be entitled to additional financial relief if you are officially unemployed. To qualify for this, you must:

  • Be officially unemployed. This means that a tertiary institution or the Department of Labour must have confirmed that your employment was terminated due to reasons beyond your control, such as retrenchment or business closure
  • Be able to prove that you’re unemployed by showing proof of termination letter and/or ID document from the department where you were last employed
  • Show proof of financial distress (for example, bank statements), which will help show that you need financial relief

Financial relief can also be obtained if you are employed and not receiving a full salary due to the lockdown.

You can apply for the grant online or by phone. The latter involves calling up 0800-00-100 and speaking to an agent, who will request all the necessary details before you submit your request.

Here’s another thing: if your ID book or card has been lost, damaged, or stolen, it doesn’t mean that you are ineligible to apply—you just need to provide proof of this in order to receive financial relief.

In order to qualify for the R350 unemployment grant, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You must be unemployed.
  • You must have an ID book or card.
  • You must have an income statement from your employer.
  • You must have an application form, which you can find on the SASSA website at [sassagovza].
  • You must have a bank account.
  • And finally, you need to be over 18 years old in order to qualify for R350 unemployment grant – so don’t bother trying if you’re under 18!

If you meet all of the criteria listed above, you may apply for the SASSA Covid-19 social relief of distress (SRD) grant. If you have any questions or concerns about your eligibility to apply for this grant, contact your nearest SASSA branch office or call 0800 222 555.

You can apply by means of an online form on the SASSA website.

To apply, you need to be registered for a SASSA account and have your ID book or card ready. If you don’t have an ID book or card, go to your nearest post office with a copy of proof that you live in the area that you are applying for relief from distress (for example, a utility bill). They will then register you so that they can give out grants.

If you are not officially unemployed but only temporarily without work and would like assistance paying for food and/or rent/housing costs while looking for employment again, fill out our application form below:

  • First name:
  • Last name: *

The application process takes place entirely online. To apply for your bursary, you must access the online form via your SASSA account and fill in all required information. You will need to provide details such as name, address, ID number and bank account details when you submit your application. You can also upload supporting documents such as proof of identity or proof of residence at this stage.

Once you have submitted the form, it will be processed automatically by SASSA’s system which will notify you immediately that your application has been successful or not within 7 days after submission (10 working days if submitted on a public holiday).

If there are any errors or omissions in your submission, these will be addressed before processing is completed so that no unnecessary delays occur during this period. If no errors are found in the submission then please wait for an SMS notification from SASSA informing you that payment has been made into your account before visiting a vendor/customer service centre with proof of identity to collect vouchers from them (if applicable)

Unfortunately, as most organisations in South Africa cannot pay their staff, it is very unlikely that your employer will be able to provide these documents. This does not mean that you cannot apply for social grants online.

If your employer is unable or unwilling to provide these documents for you, you must contact the closest Sassa office and make an appointment with an official at least 14 days before the closing date of your application.

At this meeting, you will be asked to submit proof of residence (such as a recent utility bill or bank statement), proof of identity (your ID Book) and proof of income or pension slip issued by a government agency or non-governmental organisation (NGO). You will also need a valid debit order form signed by your bank manager if they require payment.

If you do not have an ID book or card, do not let this stop you from applying for financial relief. You can still apply for the grant by means of a letter from your employer. The letter must include the following information:

  • Your name
  • Your ID number
  • The name of your employer

Although you will need to have a valid ID book or card in order to apply for the R350 grant, you can still qualify for the grant even if you don’t have a current ID book or card. You will not be able to apply for the grant online, however. To submit an application for the R350 grant and qualify without having a current ID book or card, follow these steps:

  • Print out an offline application form and fill it in manually. You can find this form at this link: https://www.sassa.gov.za/forms/apply_form_printable3_pdf?download=true&link=https://forms20-20-20-completedifyouareusingadobeacrobatreader9orearlierversionsofthisapplicationformmaynotworkproperlyonyourcomputer

Closing

The R350 grant is a great way to get some financial relief, but bear in mind that it does not replace your salaries and other benefits. It should be used as a supplement to any other forms of income you have. Also remember that the SASSA online application process is very simple and easy to complete with just a few clicks of your mouse!
